Zyxware technologies joins hands once again with GNU/Linux Users Group Trivandrum to organize the third install fest of the year in Trivandrum. This time the event is planned on a much more massive scale than the first two install fests. The earlier events were 1 day events targeted at the general public. This time it is targeted at the IT community in technopark and it is a full week program. The program is scheduled to be conducted from Sep 1 to Sep 5 at Park Center, Technopark, Trivandrum.

One-day-install-fests have a small disadvantage in that they get over by the time people get to know about it from the media. We have decided to get over this problem by spreading the event from Sep 1, Monday to Sep 5, Friday. The event is going to be conducted in the heart of technopark - Park Center. We are hoping to get the event inaugurated by one of the Ministers of the Government of Kerala.

Free Software Seminar Series, Open Movie Show and 3D Desktop Demo

In addition to the installations we are also organizing daily Free Software seminars covering topics ranging from “Business Opportunities in Free Software” to “Enterprise Application Development in Free Software”. On Wednesday we will be showing some of the popular Open Movies like Big Buck Bunny and Elephants Dream.

During the Fest

IT professionals working in Technopark can bring in their laptops to the Park Center and drop it off to get any of the Free Software Distributions installed. They also will have the opportunity to buy T-Shirts, Stickers, CDs and DVDs at the Fest. There will be informational posters, live presentations, open movie shows around the counters. There will also be a couple of GNU/Linux Gaming PCs available for people to try out the open games.

Zyxware Planning to Launch Freedom Toaster

During this install fest, we are also planning to unveil a freedom toaster. (If you don’t know already, a freedom toaster is a Free Software Vending Kiosk that will burn and give any of your favorite Free Software at the click off a button. It would look and operates like any of the soft drink vending machines) If we are able to pull this off, this will probably become the first time that somebody has done this in India. The Freedom Toaster is expected to turn quite a few heads during the Install fest.

Our Objective

Through this event and through the Freedom Toaster, we are hoping to generate enough buzz inside Technopark to be able to bring in new Free Software users and to rope in those professionals who are already using Free Software. In addition we are also hoping that at least a few companies in Technopark would become interested in trying out the freedom offered by FLOSS.

Partners

The partners for this event in addition to Zyxware and GLUG are Kerala State IT Mission, SPACE-Kerala, Free Software Foundation of India.

BSNL - Telecommunication Sponsor

BSNL has agreed to sponsor the event as the Telecommunications Partner and they will be meeting all the telecom and internet needs. They will be providing us with complete WiFi access in the Park Center and EVDO Wireless access at the Kiosks. A BSNL representative will also be present to demonstrate the configuration of BSNL broadband and EVDO in GNU/Linux.

JAAS NOVUS is the name given to a scooter with out a handle. The coolest scooter ever was designed and built by a team of students from NI engineering college. The aim is to enable the handicapped also drive a scooter and be on his own. Instead of using hands, the steering is controlled by shoulders. Every other control is controlled by legs. The beauty is that you can drive keeping your hands folded.

The scotter was test driven by Suresh Gopi in a function in Technopark. It took two years for them to develop the prototype. The cost incurred was 45,000 Rs. If this goes into mass production, better fulel efficiency can be achieved, also better mileage with use of better engines.

buraq..a carrier to clinic?

Posted on April 18th, 2008 in Technopark News) by cj | 0 Comments »

You might’ve understood the stuff i’m talking about, by now itself . Ye, its about the very contemptuous restaurant on the top floor of Bhavani building in technopark, the Buraq.

We, the tpians(technoparkian) were tolerating, from hair to rubber-bands, worms to cockroaches, and now its….. raw food. Here is the latest experience of a fellow tpian. He was served with 3 prawns well decorated with onions above it, from here. But he was lucky enough to consume only a single piece from them. And luckier is he, to be ‘alive’ now, in a bedridden state, with a serious problem with his health, for the high body temperature, nausea and headache. The fact is that he was served with raw food; a raw prawn straight from the market place. The prawn was unwashed and unclean with half removed shells and sand.

As the fellow who was the victim in the above incident said, ‘our patience was mistook for our passiveness’. Its a bare, ugly truth hardly any tpian would disagree. We go for the over priced menu from these places (i feel guilty to call it now, a restaurant). We never question the quality or the price of the stuff served to us. Some take it as an affair of prestige or a good manner, and some others think about their company ’status’ when questioning back. We are only concerned about our work and our workplace. We hardly think about our health. The result, we earn to cure ourselves…!!

This time it was Buraq. The picture is no different with the other so-called restaurants here. As it is said commonly, ‘many do mistakes, some gets caught, few gets trialed and fewer gets punished’. And similar incidents have been occuring frequently. And it stays a hot topic for some time, and then it cools off till the next disaster. We’ve been complaining about these kinda incidents to the concerned authorities every time, but to no use most of the time. Hats off to the companies who’ve started their own restaurants for their employees, staying an exception. But what about the others. Lets think about giving an award for the worst restaurant in technopark every month..!!

Coming here for work from a far off native doesn’t mean we should keep mum everytime or stay inactive. Being formally dressed doesn’t mean we are passive fellows. Respond to anything that you may feel unfair. Be it in a market, a hotel or any other public place. You’ll never be alone in public for you’ll surely find a fellow tpian by your side. And your decency will never be under-estimated for any fair question. And public will think of you as a responsible citizen. Our company is not going to gain or loose anything from it. Its ourselves. Lets grow a healthy, responsive professional culture in our home, Technopark.

Tail-piece: The word Buraq means ‘lightning’ in arabic. According to Islamic tradition Buraq is a heavenly creature that carried Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to heaven and back during the Isra and Miraj (Coutesy to Wikipedia). Lets not allow the authorities to ruin this holy name.
